There is also, Jo-ha-kyu, Ki-sho-ten-ketsu, Dream Diary (Yume no Ki), Noh/Kabuki Story structure.

Beginning-middle-end, wasn't a story structure in Poetics. He was trying to argue for a continuous with no flashbacks simple plot.

Yes, I am familiar with kishotenketsu, for sure, and I think some Western authors even use it. But for most who want an agent, they'll have to come up with a beginning, middle and end structure.

Agents are becoming more aware of other types of story structures. I saw one book that covered the Tuskegee Experiment where the author clearly used memory as the story driver, was a Black Author, and was recently published. It's on my list to be read. We don't have to follow Syd Field 100% anymore.

BTW, Jo-Ha-Kyu is cool. It was kinda adapted for Westerns but mostly because of Kurosawa's huge influence on the Western format that some people used it unwittingly.

Women also argued for development as a story driver too. Finally won in the early 2000's.

Flexibility isn't a bad thing to advocate for.

If written brilliantly, you can get away with breaking the rules. No one is saying you can't write however you want. But there are those who get frustrated because they can't get to first base and wonder why. And they are often wanting to break "rules" before first learning storytelling techniques.
