I have a friend who is very into making signs and protesting. This person looks down on anyone who does not make signs and protest, regardless of anything else. It's very irritating, like I guess getting local progressives elected is nothing.

Navigating the immediate future is going to require a lot of folks to adjust the way they view social media behaviors. The function of "following", the content people choose to prioritize. You will no longer get much mileage out of trying to glean a person's investment from shallow activity.

I do very little activism online or in person now I'm old. I write letters to elected employees, I donate to groups doing important things, I support others, and much of what I do is invisible.

I am a politically active person and I don't post much about politics. I don't think posting about it helps much. I do think it can provide useful information, motivation, and/or sadistic pleasure to the opposition.

Yep. Often an individual has to prioritize one specific thing too.

Just because they are not grumbling constantly about one topic online doesn't mean they are not working their butt off to address something else more important to them.

All the most effective activism I’ve done has been off social media. It’s been patient and unsexy and unsuitable for public performance because it was collaborative and didn’t need me to be a star. That’s where most of the real work gets done!
