I won't say nintendo was perfect in this era. but they wanted to serve people an option that wasnt hyper expensive, mega hyped AAA games. but now they're just another sony/microsoft to me.
Not to mention they had these back in the day which I’m pretty sure were around around the same price as Nintendo Selects. Nintendo is bad when it comes to letting games go on regular sale but they had budget options for the longest time
Nintendo has sales when they're doing poorly on hardware and need to make up revenue. When Nintendo does well, they keep prices high to maintain brand value.
i think the key here is that nintendo does that when they’re struggling and they just haven’t been struggling since 2017. player’s choice was for a floundering gamecube. selects was introduced when they realized the wii was a fad and nobody was buying games. obv the wii u gen was a failure (1/2)
all that said, buying secondhand is still a possibility for nintendo stuff. i’ve seen $20-30 copies of BOTW on facebook marketplace and $10-20 for all the not huge release stuff. nintendo is greedy but there are options
They've been making Player's Choice versions of their games all the way back to the SNES. Not a struggling system. But now, Sony & MS have basically ceded the platformer and family markets to Nintendo, leaving only indie PC games to compete. No reason to mark things down when you're a monopoly.
the SNES was absolutely feeling the burn from the genesis/mega drive. regardless of Nintendo’s success they were feeling threatened. The difference today is that nintendo has carved out a significant market segment that neither of the big names feel like seriously competing in (as you said)
Yeah it's crazy the Nintendo Selects/Players Choice died with the 3DS/Wii U.
I keep saying it but the final breath of humanity for Nintendo was exhaled by Iiwata when he passed away. It really feels like he was the last person making Nintendo good. Now it's just like every other company...
They always had budget options/fair prices until recently. Gunpei Yokoi’s philosophy was to offer an affordable product that uses existing technology and present it in a way. An idea embraced by Hiroshi Yamauchi and later by Satoru Iwata. Unfortunately Shuntaro Furukawa seems to have changed that.
Hand selecting me $40 DS games half or quarter off and a marketing push to make the WiiU relevant and no longer selling Wii games at $20 off, isn’t the budget options Id be looking for. But yes, those are budget options for an era of $50 or less games.
you are being disingenuous. you can say this is bad on paper, but this is how i and many others built a 3DS library as a kid. AC had this price drop as a major update came out. the community grew a ton from this drop. This stuff matters.

the reality is that nintendo don't really care
Like best sellers discount was common on ALL consoles.
*multibillion dollar company
Nintendo is just greedy and it's paying off.
"Nintendo has never had a budget option" except they did during the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS eras.
Absolutely insane to me how selective people's memories are when they wanna spin a narrative

This isnt even all of it.
