With apologies for Econ jargon: we’ll never solve the problem of women underrepresentation if we only make demand-side changes (quotas etc.) - we’ll hit walls if we try. The supply has to grow - more women well trained and willing to stay in academia - and we faculty are mostly responsible for this.

Sometimes I feel the quotas hurt the cause more than help.

People act like others don’t deserve their positions because of the quota, whether it’s true or not.

Idk what the solution is. Just an observation.

I am taking a bit of time to recover from 20 years as a professor. I’ve been in the field or training for 30 years…. Until very recently leaving did not seem possible. Do you have advice??

Also, reframe your existing skill sets with your desired job in mind. E.g., project management is a valuable skill and as PI you did that.
Get a coach to help you. They are expensive, but worth it. You are an investment. Being clear about what you want is priceless.

I was in corporate life for 20 years post-Ph.D. Then I went to law school. I am learning that starting over is hard and finding a way to feel like your past experience is valued is harder. Get comfortable with humble, but don't take shit and ask for what you want. If you don't ask, you won't get it.
