Good to hear it is not one of those classic travel agent cock ups of getting Austria and Australia mixed up like Vienna and Venice 😂.
I've always had a soft spot for Vienna.
Train more reliable... ...also night trains.
Vienna fun, converts and balls too if you are into that sort of thing.
Also easy to hop around the city and neighbouring cities, Graz, Bratislava etc.
The time I went to Venice they cancelled my returns by email while we were having lunch before heading to the airport! Had to find accommodation for a family for another night and then get back via a series of trains. Got a refund about 8 months later. Takes real effort to be that shit.
I mean, got an extra day’s holiday, had a day at the Lido and then the romance of a sleeper train via Milan to Paris so costly and inconvenient but an adventure of a kind!
If you have time after all the Schiele and Klimt visit the Literature Museum in Vienna. For non-German speakers like me there is a good audio guide which accompanies the exhibits.
In the autumn of 1918, the Spanish flu pandemic reached Vienna. Edith, who was six months pregnant, died from the disease on 28 October. Schiele died only three days after his wife. He was 28 years old. During the three days between their deaths, Schiele drew a few sketches of Edith.
Instead of watching Nick Roeg’s wonderful film set in Venice “don’t look now”, watch his wonderful film set in Vienna “bad timing”, which if I remember opens with Schieles.
Buy the Vienna Pass! It’s SO worth it as you can go to all the big places (and skip queues) and just pop into as many little places as you like (and some of the little places are more interesting than the big ones!)
I rolled in when the Kunsthistorisches doors opened one morning and got to spend about 15 minutes completely alone in the room of Breughels and Cranachs 😀

If you like a bit of historical bling, the Imperial Treasury is quite something

“Venice was unavailable so we’ve sent you to Vienna instead.”

Go on the big swing at the Prater as well.
Sure, you have no idea who I am. But on the plus side, I live in Vienna 😊
