fair to say I'm not a huge army fan but, huh, this feels symptomatic of maybe a bigger problem that needs addressing, and almost certainly won't be addressed anytime soon

The devastation that is the American education 'system' (ie: what fucking system) is a major issue, and one of the fundamental reasons why it's all so fucked up right now over there.
(If you ask me).
To me that implies the issue is more likely to be that the men *who want to enlist*, are less likely to have decent academic standards to begin with, rather than that men overall are doing terribly on those fronts though.
I mean certainly not for the US military, but it could just be that men who have at least a high school diploma have better economic prospects elsewhere/just plain don't want to join the military?
Given the cultural pressure on many young men to reject education as unmasculine, maybe US schools could exploit this to push the goal of passing the army entrance test alongside the traditional school diploma? This could at least encourage less able young men to leave school with some basic skills.
Younger me has a visceral reaction to this, because "young, male and unemployed in summer 2016" was exceedingly fertile ground for military recruitment on the Internet. Interesting that they're struggling despite the similar online landscape (speaking of, thanks for writing Escape as it got me out!)
Genuinely hurt me to read your subsequent articles relitigating the ending as the book was so much help as a niche interest message board boy rather than a Tumblr girl (ice hockey in Portugal, nothing weird I promise😂)
