Let me tell you a story. Now I come from a gun owning family (target shooting, hunting etc) and at one time collected WW2 allied rifles. I didn’t like semi automatic guns because they require a lot more maintenance and when hunting you probably shoot 3-4 rounds per trip max. At the range maybe 40.

So the semi automatic part is kinda worthless. Also in the same price range a semi automatic gun will always be less accurate. This went on until I met “Doug”.

This was back in 2010 and Doug was my GFs neighbor. He was pre-MAGA- had the upside down flag and all. I got to know him and while he was crazy we both liked Huskies football and WW2 guns so we could chat sociably. That is until I broke up with the neighbor and told Doug.

There are a lot of dangers in the world. We all have to negotiate them. ever since then I have kept Doug’s words in mind. And while it’s unlikely.. well I don’t expect a car accident but I wear a seat belt.

I’ve always been so very scared of guns. But all of the hate from the right wing and “your body my choice” from right wing men has made me strongly consider getting a gun for my own safety. Something I’ve never considered doing before.

Have you ever taken any self defense training? Just bc you have and know how to use a gun doesn't mean anything if someone can take it from you. I don't disagree with your right to protect yourself, but I do disagree with anyone who brandishing it in public bc they are scared of something.

Denise. I would highly recommend a in person training course. And practice. Lots of practice. It’s not like riding a bicycle where your mistakes kill just you. And gun safety measures that are right for you.

At a minimum I recommend a gun safe with a passcode. That way you never lose a key. If you have kids, kids that come over or may come over you can add additional measures like keeping the gun unloaded, locking the room where the safe is etc.

If you are going to carry a gun. You will need to practice a lot. And think about where you go and where you might use a gun. And who may be around. For myself despite owning guns since I was 18 (many many years ago) I don’t carry a gun because I don’t feel like I practice enough.

So for me they are for home defense. But we are all different. Treat a gun like a car- it’s really dangerous when used carelessly so give it the attention it deserves and always err on the side of caution.

Civilian gun stock in the U.S. has increased dramatically over the years. There were 33,000 gun deaths in 2013 & now that # has grown to ~45,000. Before you bring a gun into your home, remember that having a gun in your home will double your risk for homicides & triple your risk for suicides.

The decision to arm yourself is a very personal decision. If you’re going to purchase a weapon, you must TRAIN AND PRACTICE regularly. You must also become familiar with the laws on armed self defense and commit to safe use and storage.

Guns in Vermont is nothing new, but the gun virus is, the need for more, the right wing scaring the good ol boys that Democrats will "take their guns away". Great marketing tactic. People hunt, it's accepted, farmers need them, sportsmen enjoy them, but the militia mentality has taken over some.

I grew up in Vermont & my husband went hunting as a child but we made a decision to not bring guns into our home with 4 children. When I was growing up, I never met Vermonters who carried handguns around for protection.
