The Court is clear that, given the Supreme Court decision in Finch, it is unlawful for new oil & gas projects to be approved without accounting for the climate harm caused by burning their oil & gas, by far the biggest source of emissions (known as scope 3 emissions).

Previously, enviro assessments for these projects only considered the emissions caused by extracting--not burning--a project's oil & gas: an absurd position. The previous UK govt didn't consider scope 3 emissions when approving Rosebank. Therefore its approval was unlawful.

So what happens next? Equinor & Ithaca may apply again to the UK gov't for a development consent, but they'll have to wait until the gov finalises its new approach to considering scope 3 emissions in the spring. In the meantime, no oil or gas can be extracted from the field.

A few things to note here: the new UK gov't conceded early on that the decision was unlawful, but the companies--Equinor & Ithaca--argued hard that the decision shouldn't be quashed (or "reduced" as it's known in Scotland). In rejecting that argument, Lord Ericht stated...

It's hard to imagine that an oil field of any size--let alone one that will create 200 million tonnes of CO2--can pass any credible enviro assessment.
