I dunno, maybe corporations blasting many tens of millions of dollars all trying to make the Next Fortnite when there can really only be one Next Fortnite at any time and it's very likely Fortnite is the Next Fortnite, maybe this is not super sustainable. Just thinking out loud.

Those market conditions do not exist now.
It wasn't planned. You can't really plan it!
Corporations are always trying to follow trends without understanding their limitations or even what made these games famous.
Those cars that will never be driven won't buy themselves!
So many WoWs.
dev teams like the Rivals of Aether team are those super passionate people who played a 23 year old game. they just wanted to improve on it. it's artistic first, not about finding a market
ie. the crash bandicoot multiplayer game was an idea from the developers fucking around far before activision said "multiplayer crash", and the devs just believed in it as a game
Big things that make a lot of money are more likely to come from low-risk experiments then pointing at Overwatch and saying 'make that'
I bought it and really enjoyed it.
I'm sure they make almost as much money as they cost other companies 😀
"Great. Take it completely apart so you can make the jackpots 1% bigger."
"But we don't understand how it works - that might break it entirely."
"But... we'll get 1% more if it does."
Or the glut of MOBA's we had for a while?
Sure, some of them were successful enough to stick around and occupy a niche in the same genre. Few were the "[popular game] killer" publishers aimed for
Also yeah, services inevitably devolve into incumbents blocking all new entrants through reputation and network effect.
The world needs more fantastical indie dreams.
It's easy to convince yourself your idea has a 1% chance of success, as opposed to 0.01%. Low numbers are hard.
Buddy advised, "you really should start Fortnite!"
Meanwhile, all the supposed "wow killers" are dead.
Fortnite will be the same.
It started with the communities and culminated with Wildstar being incredibly smug about it. Sad it died, the game had a lot of heart, but the marketing was incredibly cringe.
Players get very loyal to their MMO/live service game. I have friends I met in vanilla still playing WoW today.
Most modern games will be unplayable in just 2 or 3 years.

There are even recent games that were released in this year and will be shut down before 2025 even comes out.
on one hand the chance on toppling fortnite with a superior game is next to 0. But to put money into something innovative and new, potentially to huge success, is seen as wasteful, regardless of odds.
Does the game have a lot of rough edges, a confusing combat system and an unintuitive UI? Yes.
Does that matter when the story is good? No
beyond that I appreciate a game that doesn’t shake a cup at me every day or month asking for change. Like you are a billion dollar company.
This is not how the gaming industry works and why one-hit-wonders are such a regular phenomenon.
Iterating great ideas and building on top or completely is the only way...
