An academic publication providing a "what if". Conclusion being that the merged country would likely become more like Canada than the US. I found it interesting but appreciate that I'm an outsider.

It's not interesting. It's completely false and made up. The idea that Republicans would be ok with absorbing a population of 41 million people who are more socially and economically liberal than them is ridiculous.

Canada would be a powerless territory ruled from D.C. at best.

No, the US would not be more like Canada. They'd try to destroy our medical system, our gun control laws, our unions, and everything that makes us Canadian because it would be an affront to them and their "American values."

I share this opinion so what I found interesting was that the outcome could be different. Understand that I hope Australia backs Canada in any annexation attempt by the US. A silver lining could be that the CANZUK alliance is formed.
