Can't argue that. Spotify is worth billions thanks to music artists. Meanwhile, artists are earning fractions of a penny per listen.
Because music labels weren't predatory enough, streaming sites have come in to rake more money from artists
Não só pros artistas, aplicativo horroroso, poluído, criou uma cultura ridícula de que quem tem mais charts tem mais qualidade, incentivando música genérica
I agree, but Bjork and other mainstream artists keep their music on Spotify regardless. High-profile popstars/artists (and their labels) should leave Spotify and abandon promotions in large numbers. If enough fans are not finding their favorite artists/songs, then they will likely follow suit.
Bjork is a huge artist - she broke the mainstream in the 90s and has had an enormous influence in the industry. She doesn't need Spotify to continue being successfu yet she is on there constantly taking promotions of her music, is my point
Right, so this is something she, and others, need to negotiate with their labels. I just don't agree that relying on Spotify to pay artists more (where 'more' still needs to be properly defined) is a realistic expectation. Labels and big names in music need to own more of this task than individuals.
I can assure you as some one in the business it’s not as simple as is being imagined here- so o hope shedding some intel on the situation helps. But many on the industry are aware. The share holders hold the keys and purse strings- like many industries.
So- again the labels are major share holders in Spotify. I’ll let you imagine how that would work. :) And I agree- I’m not relying on them I don’t use them. Others should stop too. If some one doesn’t play fair- don’t play with them. In this cause swap play for pay.
That's my point. Individuals can't effectively boycott Spotify (I roll my eyes when artists tell fans not to use it), but celebrity popstars have enough influence with labels & other shareholders of Spotify. Taylor Swift left, and they capitulated within months - imagine if she did it indefinitely?
Whatever happened to musician and recording artists unions? Shouldn't they be working on getting better rates for members? They seemed to disappear after trying to sue college students for illegal downloads.
Streaming would be fine if the technology owners wouldn't be hoarding so much.
Musicians in the US can’t unionize this way. And Spotify lobbies in congress against royalties going up. Spotifys owner, Ek uses his earnings to fund his other venture- which is an AI military tech co- which is being used in some current conflict.
Not only Spotify, streaming platforms in general. We used to own records, we paid for an album once and the music was ours to listen to it as many times as we wanted to. Now, if we don't keep up with monthly subscriptions we listen with more commercials than my mom's telenovelas
Not sure what you mean by “we used to”. I currently own over 900 albums on vinyl and have never used any of the music streamers.
We all have a choice. You can support artists by purchasing CDs/ records or you can continue using streaming services and keep pretending you have no other options.
Well baby, I'm happy you have the means and the luck to have shops where you can get those records, but there are places, like my dusty town, where those are scarce. But go ahead, keep talking shit about others and listen to your good music
Maybe, or maybe not. I just think their app needs some attention. It's missing a dark theme, and the web app doesn't expose all media controls and metadata. I assume they lack resources to work on that.
If it took off it would gradually stop letting artists own their music. Companies are looking for money, there is just no reason to believe bandcamp would be an exception. Until we get rid of capitalism, artists, just like all workers, will be exploited and deprived from most of the money they make.
I heard they were trying to open a physical store pre-pandemic in Bay Area that sold everyone’s merch and stuff and I thought that was so cool. I know they’re doing show case stage at NAMM Show right now. That’s a good vibe.
Bandcamp, Patreon. Booths at live shows. Supporting small music venues. Vinyl purchases straight from the Indie labels. I’m old school but I’ll do everything I can to help musicians. Music makes the world go round.
I'm sorry, but no one is forcing an artist to use Spotify. I agree that competition pressures artists who need exposure, but Spotify does not employ musicians. Artists and record companies/media conglomerates need to pull out of Spotify so that their consumers can go elsewhere for their media.
Duna, respectfully, I think you’re missing my point. Very few artists aren’t on Spotify. I’m saying Musicians are in a tough predicament. Artists submitting to a large corporation that exploits their creations for a profit is sad. I always buy direct from the musicians. I will never use Spotify.
I getcha, but mainstream/high-profile artists have enough leverage with their labels/companies to demand where their music gets put out. An artist like Bjork could use her leverage to manage where her music is streamed and enough influence to sway other big artists to do the same.
I totally agree. When Robert Smith of The Cure took on Ticketmaster to reduce erroneous fees and lower ticket prices, it was amazing. He mobilized his entire fanbase. To your point, they could follow the same thinking pertaining to Spotify. Would be awesome.
Right, and bigger artists have enough listeners that will follow them. I mean, if Taylor Swift left Spotify (she won't), her millions of fans would absolutely do the same.
