And forgive the typo in my reponse-- I meant "one of"-- but actually, it's easily my favorite episode. I used to have my students in media ethics class watch it, because of all the ethical issues contained in the plot.
TNG had some episodes that went deep. S5E25 "the inner light" is a favorite of mine too, where captain JL Picard (who incidentally "stole" my 1st name, still waiting for royalties...) lives a lifetime on a dying planet, starts a family, and learns to play the flute.
I had so many favorite episodes, and this was certainly one of them. I also loved the character of Data and how he often struggled to understand human nature. Data is all of us...
Data's humanity chip (and his "brother", Lore) seemed to me to indicate how quickly 1 can flip between good & evil. Don't know if that was the intent of those episodes, maybe not, but that's the impression it left.
And that's why there is so much to analyze in TNG episodes. Some very thought-provoking plots. I felt the same way about a lot of Deep Space 9 episodes too.
