From what I've read they're investing in more pumped hydro in Scotland. Seems like it wasn't just the broad facts of geography blocking it then.

Scotland is mountainous, the south of England is flat. The Netherlands has virtually zero hydro power. The broad facts of geography play a part.

PH in Sco needed a funding model - C&F - but its essentially small in the wider mix. Lets generously assume everything thats proposed gets built. We're roughly looking at 95GWh of storage and GWs from 2.8->7.7

None of the above means don't build it tbc. But the maximal potential of PH is limited in GB by geography* and the system value is lower than it could be if it were distributed more evenly.

(*In theory one of the proposed High Density Fluids could change this but I'm sceptical)

But having done all that its still the wrong side of the B6 boundary. While it will lower local curtailment its a lousy location really from the POV of the overall grid.

Plenty of BESS in planning/approved/building in Eng (and some in Sco as its quicker than PH) but obv that is SDES not LDES so its not the same value.
