I feel like your label of"souls arcade" was on the money because, like, I dont like Nightrain BECAUSE its arcadey souls game. I also dont like sinking 400hrs in Eldenring, but if I DONT spend hours upon hours exploring the cool fromsoftware world and instead just fight some bosses its different appeal
Honestly it looks like something that in another timeline was an outsourced china only mobile game and the fromsoft branding is giving it a fair pass for what ultimately seems like Metal Gear Survive for soulslikes.
Reading a lot of these complaints, and feel this game needs to exist way more than 24 hours to actual give merit to these. It being a rouge lite I’d say wait till someone has at least serval double digit hours before listening to takes on the loop. Since that’s how long it takes to feel the loop.
Actually it could go the other way and worsen over time. A lot of people like Oroboro have pointed out its not really a roguelike and theres a about half a dozen premade maps "but the southern mine always has the same troll boss in it" which suggests the honeymoon period could be a real short one.
I mean, the reviews from credible souls content Creators is right there and they all seem to have valid complaints about the same things. How the "Rouge lite" elements could have been handled better since it becomes easy to determine the meta routes and what to ignore.
I’m referring specifically to the complaints in this thread from non content creators that only had the 24 hours with the game. Not enough time has passed for people to truly get the final feel of the loop, and not just just regurgitate opinions from said souls content creators.
Pat dropping this after saying it feels like an MMO, Woolie is doomed. I hope Duskbloods is different than this if not I’ll wait for the next real game.
I’m glad they put out a test game to better their weak spots (multiplayer). While this game will almost definitely push many away until the big boy comes out, I find it cool they can take what they will use from this game’s lifecycle to future bigger titles. I wonder what/when the patch is going out
Fromsoft is lucky they have all this goodwill to experiment. It's fun to watch people stream at least. Maybe things will pick up, but for now, I see this game having horrible first impressions all around
Try Vaatividya's newest vid, it's got a handful of tips about how to parse the map, prioritize goals per run/per day-of-run, and how to better ping allies to stuff.
It's a *weird* title in so many little ways. I'll probably play it every now and then for solo runs if i'm ever wanting something akin to a quick ER Randomizer run but I'm genuinely not sure that there's enough here for people that aren't turbofreaks about these games and even then... it's weird
i gave it a go and i was expecting there would be a SLIGHT adjustment for doing singe player runs. i got two shot by the first boss as lvl6 Wylder.
i was expecting the first boss to NOT be super hard to hurt either, but it was a tanky ass Bell Bearing Knight. thats a fucking night 2 boss, wtf man?
I know it seems weird, but Nightreign is actually a play on words. It refers to both the rule of the lords that control the storm, but also the rain that comes at night that literally destroys time and space.
At first I was like "damn I'd love some quick bites of Elden Ring" and then I remembered I can just go play Elden Ring and that I don't really like co-op, so I'm saving my $50 and just trying a few more builds out in Erdtree.
I had a ton of fun playing with my friends last night. Playing the network beta set my expectations correctly, and I made sure my friends understood this is NOT a souls game. Its quick, requires you to think on your feet, and the characters are fun to try out. I do have problems with the UI though/1
It's it's hidden in the menus but I think it's under the journal tab it tells you all the characters abilities, their scalings, and what the icons on the map mean
Ill check tonight and read some more. I didnt read the journal cuz i did during the beta. The only description I found for ult was “drive a gravekeepers wedge into the earth to summon a giant tombstone”. I dont understand why they cant just say at the end “provides a boost to STR to you and allies”.
This is one of those times where the existence of the game is more beneficial to the devs themselves vs the player base the game is meant to cultivate.
Like, it's cool what the game is being used FOR, but it just sounds like its going to be a hard sale as a marketable product.
I haven't played it but it's super fun to watch. I hope they can tweak a bunch because from what I've seen it feels like they're onto something, they're just not quite hitting the mark.
Seems like the thing it's aiming to be isn't your jam, and maybe never will be barring them reworking core run-feel stuff.
Like, does it spark any extra interest if the game was magically about to include your favorite Fromsoft boss or whatever - could a hook tailored to you make you care?
I’m having a lot of fun with it always noting to temper my expectations because it’s a completely different thing and they succeeded in what they set out to do.
I really like the preset characters because they all do feel unique. You know they did good when the Archer is fun to play in a souls game
Same the loop sucks and progression feels non existent. I don't like looting 1000 items and fumbling with my menus in a souls like. Will give it another session but for 5 hours playing with the homes was the only thing keeping me. Never touching solo.
I wish it had a normal point at thing with camera and ping it instead of having to open the map, though I'm interested in hearing your thoughts cause I just wanna get back in there and run some more runs
No; you can't lose permanent progression on your person (equipped relics) by dying, and dying to a day's-end boss still will proc some amount of rewards on being returned to roundtable.
Yah, I'm a huge soulsborne/elden ring fan but it just was NOT scratching the itch. Felt weird, random difficulty jumps. It's fine but not something I feel like playing more of atm.
It's literally not though? It is using their standing to let new directors make experimental games within the relatively safe environment of Elden Ring. Like, look into the game for a single minute dude.
Ironically, they've explained pretty much the opposite view of it, where the larger more successful games have allowed them to make these sort of weird niche products that might financially / commercially / court of opinion fail but allows them to try new things/give their employees expperience.
You not liking something doesn't make it a cashgrab. They've explained in at least two interviews that this is an experimental title that they wanted to do of their own volition.
regardless of whether it turns out good, calling it a cash grab is uncharitable when they were really extremely clear about everything this game was. they didnt hide that it was almost entirely them recooking assets into something outside the norm to see how it's turn out
Nitpick, but it's not an extraction game: you can't lose equipment or any form of metaprogression stuff by dying, and even failing mid-run still gives partial rewards on return to Roundtable. Also nothing about how nice the gear you found on a run is translates into anything you take back to base.
New doesn't necessarily mean creatively original property, more like things *they've* never done, stuff they've never tried. It's like when they made Deracine, they hadn't made a game in VR before, so they opted to dredge up their old Echo Night style to experiment in it.
I mean its only 40 dollars. And by using reused assets it allows the game to be made on the cheaper side. And like it told you out the gate was it was. Its not pretending to be a brand new game, you need to play. You may be overreacting.
Played solid two nights with my friends; we're all familiar with FromSoft games. Great experience! But definitely needs tweaking. There's a buncha QoL stuff that feels like it could be improved without "making it easier." No day timers, picking up items are clunky, reviving feels inconsistent, etc.

It's an adjustment from what I look for in soulslikes (exploration) but that was advertised.
Not sure if baiting or serious. But I gotta find out
Wasn't expecting this
i was expecting the first boss to NOT be super hard to hurt either, but it was a tanky ass Bell Bearing Knight. thats a fucking night 2 boss, wtf man?
Call me when Duskbloods is out!
I also cant remember what half the spells/incantations do in the game but the game expects me to know cuz they dont explain them anywhere in game.
Like, it's cool what the game is being used FOR, but it just sounds like its going to be a hard sale as a marketable product.

It genuinely feels like the most money-grubbing thing FROMSOFT has put out. And they feel safe doing it because of all the goodwill they built up.
Like I get it, but I'm not for it.
There's nothing being done here that's new at all. It's a mishmash of already popular genres with the Souls paint on it.
I just wish they didnt rush you so much
Reusing assets really isnt that big a deal. After so many banger games I feel like theyve earned the right to do so.
I like it. But it is very diffrent.
