For a company of 20 people, this has a significant cost. We spend 10% of our time on R&D, and this effort fuels most of our articles. I also spend a good 5% of my own time writing and reviewing articles, coaching developers who aren't natural-born writers, and suggesting subjects.

Some of this investment pays off, as we occasionally get customers or hires stemming from a blog post. But the cost/benefit ratio of our writing is clearly on the losing side. Fortunately, we don't do it for the money.

We publish on our blog because we like to share. We also do it because we benefit greatly from the work of many bloggers around the world. Without this wonderful ecosystem, we wouldn't be a company in the first place.
