This is of course a highly emotive and sensitive subject, but I know that those on opposite sides of the debate can agree on the need to place the wishes and interests of those experiencing the immense trauma and suffering of terminal illness at the centre of this debate. 2/6🧵

There are so many nuances and complexities to this discussion that I think often get lost. Contrary to what many might assume, it was fascinating this evening to listen to faith leaders in parliament speak about the reasons they are in favour of a change in the law. 3/6🧵

Fundamentally, this bill is about allowing people, in very tightly defined circumstances, to have choice and control over how their lives will end. I am confident Kim's bill contains the important safeguards that are needed to prevent coercion and abuse. 4/6🧵

There are some arguing this Bill is being rushed. I do not agree, and I am pleased that @lucympowell.bsky.social has confirmed to the House that this Bill will be subject to the same full and proper scrutiny as any other law passing through parliament. 5/6🧵

Ultimately, I want to see those suffering the trauma of a terminal illness given the agency to make their own decisions about the time and manner of their death, subject to strict safeguards, and that is why I will be voting in favour of a change to the law on 29 November. 6/6🧵

I watched you on @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social with my dad this evening. By the end he's changed his position and said if he was an MP he'd vote in favour.
