New media are tech platforms owned by the same people who own the legacy media. If you think individuals with no editorial support are more authentic than professionals, you are buying into a PR campaign pushed by Zuckerberg, Musk, Bezos el al.

New media ranges from tiktok to podcasts to blogs, some around for 20 years (TPM, MR), some splintered from other outlets (404), some people think of as Indy but aren't (wired/Condé Nast).
The problems with Indy and new media are many and moving, the problems with legacy are small and persistent.

You’re half right, but at the very least independent journalists are a more heterogenous group vs large newspaper groups. While there are the Joe rogans type grifters that are not an improvement, there are lots of good journalists distributing via blogs, websites and promoting via eg this app.

1. Heterogeneity is not a virtue in and of itself. At its worst, it’s disorganized chaos, and leads to the attention seeking behavior that has turned the internet into an outrage machine.

2. “Independent journalists” still have to eat, and without institutional support, they have to be the marketing and sales department as well as the researcher and fact checker. This is a recipe for more, not less corruption.

3. “Diversity” is an ideological trap for the left. It does not inherently promote solid epistemology. 4chan and X are more “diverse” than Twitter was, but that just means the internet is more full of mis- and disinformation.

First two points are valid critiques, but not really an argument for legacy media, since homogeneous propaganda is obviously worse and corruption happens everywhere. Your third point is just bizarre, since X has clearly homogenised towards promoting nazis.

Yeah this third point is where you completely lost the plot. You could discuss the first 2 but claiming two incel / nazi hotbeds are more diverse than twitter is just ridiculous, especially with Elon promoting his nazi shit. It's all crypto scams, nazis, and far right conspiracy.

Outside of the Acela Corridor, who reads the NYT? When you answer that question, you are correct in presuming we are giving them too much attention. Legacy media is spent as a cultural force. Vast majorities of Americans have decided they no longer matter.
