Part of why rhetoric is effective for someone is it spoke to something they already believed. You don’t just go “wow they can speak real good. I have been completely changed”.
You see this a lot with the popular myth that Hitler was incredibly charismatic. Now I wasn't there, I don't know, but I think that might just be something Germans made up postwar in order to present a shitty excuse for the fact that they heard him and liked what he said.
