Several Montana Republicans joined Democrats on Tuesday to block a measure that would have barred transgender lawmakers from using the state Capitol bathrooms that aligned with their gender identities.

Our historical democracy is on life support, our economy is controlled by people who manipulate it to their profit, our Healthcare is atrocious, etc.
All these idiots worry about is where people pee.
Sure. Celebrate small victories. But don't be deceived. The "good" "old" party didn't "help." They're still orange cultists. I don't have sympathy for folks in a christo-fascist party who happened to do something not shitty. They're still shit, all of them.
Fight for trans people, boldly and unapologetically. Anything less is transphobia.
No room for equivocation, no room for "but some conservatives are nice!" They're adults. They know what they voted for. Trans erasure is their platform. Instances like this don't change their trajectory.
Trans women also need space to do other things that people do in restrooms: Fix our hair, fix our makeup, cry... I wouldn't feel safe doing any of that around guys.
Proper single-occupancy bathrooms are the best, but it takes time to do, so until then maybe we ban bigots from restrooms?
I wonder if they understand what these bills would really do. Do they want somebody who, by all physical appearances (beards, deep voices, clothing, haircuts, etc.) are men, to use women's restrooms? That's what they'd be forcing. Nobody's going to see their genitals. Wouldn't that be disconcerting?
I would like to know what solution the GOP put forward with this bill. If a female shows up in a male bathroom, will this person have to prove, every time, that they were assigned male at birth and the rules force them to do this? This is not a solution.
Of all the priorities the American public needs, where someone is allowed to urinate or have a bowel movement SHOULD NOT be one of them. For all the perversion republicans commit in their personal and public lives this war on Restroom usage is a moronic one.
Making the trans person a far bigger issue than it actually is smacks of a previous regime in the 20th century who scapegoated people of a certain religion for similar aims, don’t you think?
Nope. No biological males in female only spaces. Females typically "share" the family bathroom for a reason. Make the men's room nonbinary/trans too and let them work it out.
Bathrooms should be divided into the following categories:
-Those for people who can sit the fuck down :)
-Those for people who prefer pissing all over the ring and floor :)
It's the same tactics used against gay men for decades, connecting them with violent offenders for being different.
There's no good reason to discriminate against trans people - that is just a distraction from the fact that the GOP offers no economic positive policy for working people
1. Look up intersex. Learn abt sex variation. 2. If u pass laws = bathroom aligns with a birth certificate, that means trans men will now have to use women's bathrooms. Many trans men look like...MEN. now any man can walk into a womens b-room & claim to be trans n defense. U dont rly care abt women
And why are you so hung up on a rule change (not a change to law) in the House of Congress targeted to hurt 1 person? She doesn’t deserve it. I am glad there are people who will stand up for simple human kindness.
Montana Republicans crossing party lines on this issue shows that dignity and respect can sometimes outweigh divisive politics. A small but significant step! 🏳️⚧️
It also shows that transphobia is a tool being imposed by a few politicians and billionaires, it's not actually a value real people hold. So much so that even Republican lawmakers will oppose this bathroom paranoia
Don’t give too much credit here- this is all due to having fair maps breaking the GOP supermajority. No doubt the 4 who held the line are being bullied by the MAGA members as you read. PS MT peeps. 👇👇 #MTPol
Also "Which cases have there been more of in public restrooms—women attacked by straight men, by straight women challenging other women's gender, or by trans women?"
Clearly to ACTUALLY keep women safe in public restrooms, legislation must instead focus on access by straight men & anti-trans women.
I mean this is rad. But like cant we just have floor to celling stalls and then we can use tax payer dollars once and be done not keep wasting time on this non sense.
I understand that but they are using the bathroom as a proxy. So take the semantical bathroom game they are playing away from them and have them now find a different more blatant way for them to be bigots.
Agreed. What's notable is that, despite the makeup of the state legislature, they still have enough reasonable people to overcome some of their worst tendencies. Let's hope this prevails on a larger scale.
So men pretending to be women should just be aloud in the women's toilet? How is that not seen as a problem? There are many sick individuals out there who will use it to their advantage. If you were born a man, you use the mens toilet and viceversa, simple......
The individuals who "take advantage" are the problem, not the individuals who want to pee and get on with it. You realize those individuals(mostly sick cis men) will take advantage of any situations. They pretend to be cops and utility workers and people who are kind and want to help.
That has never been a problem before. There is no statistical evidence that trans women being allowed to use women's bathrooms pose a threat to cis women, this is just paranoia and fearmongering by fascists
What's stopping a cis man from walking in there now? The laws you claim you want, would be far more likely to lead to the scenario you fear. What do you think will happen when trans men are using the women's restroom? You think it's going to be easier to keep cis men out of there at that point?
Frankly, I would be more concerned about those lawmakers peeking under the door to check my gender than I would those who might be in the stall next to me.
It is driven by actually knowing the person and realizing that they’re not the bogeyman they’ve been made out to be.
Congratulations to Montanans for having decent lawmakers that don’t fall for their own sides propaganda on this issue. Still a long ways to go for trans rights, but one good step.
Correct. Divide and conquer. Marginalized groups that can be peeled off with little defense from larger groups in mainstream culture are the first to be attacked. They create groups of Uncle Toms within an overlapping marginalized group to win(gays versus trans, Latinos versus undocumented, etc).
This is a good question. I would say legislation to protect individuals from institutional prejudice--& in clearly definable cases of majoritarian prejudice--is permissible. However, I don't think legislation should be used in 1:1 cases of prejudice insofar as it's only an attitude or form of speech
Thanks. That’s a thoughtful response. I believe the government has made significant strides in leveling the playing field against individual prejudice. Laws and regulations can’t fix everything but the effort has been positive overall.
I agree. There is a tendency to assume the worst of the government, but 9 out of 10 times, it is made up of people who believe they are doing the right thing.
Why are you asking? And why North Korea? You somehow think people stop being people just because they live in a communist or oppressive country? No, they simply don’t talk about it and suffer quietly. So why are you asking? Are you willing to answer me?
Stefan Z. You are replying with hunger. My question was quite simple. I need to see on the transgender reports from countries like North Korea and Iran 🇮🇷 mostly.

Good luck America.
Bothsidesism is boring and trite.

Look, the fact is
Women in women’s bathrooms are EXTREMELY private. There’s zero occasion to stray from this practice.
All gender bathrooms are usually even MORE private. Like women’s rooms, we only see each washing our hands.
Men’s bathrooms are a free for all penis viewing party. That’s disgusting.
There are WAY better things politicians should be spending their time on than this.
-Those for people who can sit the fuck down :)
-Those for people who prefer pissing all over the ring and floor :)

You appear to have built your identity around this.
Only 1 kind of person acts like that: a person deeply self-hating and in denial about who they really are.
There is NOT a single person that I have listened to, who can PROVE that they have been PERSONALLY HARMED by a transgender person! Not a single one!
Clearly to ACTUALLY keep women safe in public restrooms, legislation must instead focus on access by straight men & anti-trans women.
They want her not to exist in public.
This is just weird and creepy to think about, but the bigot wants what the bigot wants.
One party is standing in defense of human rights and all the coverage of this celebrates the small number of Republicans who haven’t embraced cruelty.
