It really bums me out, Synology was one of the best recommendations to onboard someone to self-host and now there’s just so many better options for doing that.

It really sucks, they’ve been such a solid, no-nonsense solution for ages. Thanks to your router article though, I am now fully homelab-pilled and recently migrated all my docker stuff off my Synology NAS. (My data though is a trickier problem - can’t afford to duplicate existing storage)
Was this close to pulling the trigger on one of their underpowered ass boxes as a pre tariff purchase, glad I held off. New plan is to try and get a nice rebuilt pc to get around card availability and turn my existing rig into an unRAID box I guess
Can you give an example for an alternative? I have an aging DS216j which I had for the last nine years and want to replace early next year, since I want to replace some RasPis with docker
I feel like any old hardware tower box is a better recommendation anyway. Cheaper, more utility. I get the appeal of the small form factor and ease of getting it running with a solution like those tho.
Depends on how many drives you need. Theres an advantage to having a really low power unit but a lot of the N100 MB and the NAS cases are a great way to start
