I think the first season's problem was that it was trying too hard to be the original series. Season 2 starts to pull away, and season 3 is where it finally stands on its own.

I find a few good shows flounder a bit in their first season or two before finding their feet later on. It’s why I feel salty when shows like firefly, dollhouse, dead like me get cancelled so early.
Deep Space 9 is one I thought had a better and more consistent start. It's more "down to Earth" than other Treks and I think the arc format really helped keep people engaged with it.
Highly recommend. I didn't think I'd like it because of the whole space station instead of a starship aspect, but it's got strong characters and storytelling. It's interesting in that you see a lot more of life outside of the idyllic Federation.
