Such terrible if not unexpected news. Farewell the great Johnnie Walker. My all-time favourite radio presenter. The ultimate friend-behind-the microphone.

I'm so sad to hear this news, Simon. Sorry for your loss and sorry for his loss to all the folk who counted themselves as his extended family of listeners.
Very sad losing Johnnie and Steve Wright in the same year.
JW used to lift the spirits of my friends & I at lunchtimes when we were grinding our way through school years in the Darkest Black Country of the early '70s.
Such a great respect for good music and no tolerance of rubbish - great guy.
It is sad, although not unexpected, that Johnnie Walker has gone. His spirit and passion for music and what he believed in will remain. Long live the ‘Sounds of the ’
Loved listening to Johnnie. Use to listen to his pre-recorded shows for Radio Luxembourg that he record when he lived in the States. The music he played shaped what music I listen to now, Thank you Johnnie.
I was hooked on his shows at Radio 1, and hurried home from school to catch his farewell show. When we were colleagues at Radio 2 I was over the moon. His passion for music and for radio was contagious. I caught it from him I think. Radio has lost a giant. Rest in peace Johnnie.
Have just read the news, and feel so very sad. I fell in love with his voice when I was still a school girl… he had that very special quality of making you feel he was speaking to you alone. Condolences to Tiggy and his family. Rest easy Pirate Johnnie.
This is no tribute to a man that deserves much more. I envy so much that you were friends, but at the same time am so happy you were. All I can say is that he made me happier when sad - And when happier, just even more happy.
Lovely memories.
Radio presenters have always been “appointment listening” for me. Mr. Walker’s shows meant a lot to me when I was my late Mum’s carer. I felt he was chatting to just me. It really made a difference. I loved his shows with Tiggy too. Such a warm lady. So sad. A natural broadcaster. ❤️
I am so very very sad,but also so very happy I shared, and he shared, some of his time with me. Your words are a perfect tribute to your dear friend - And also ( as you said " The ultimate friend-behind-the microphone" To all of his listeners like me, he was wonderful company.
Every year the pile of foam under his turntable grew thicker as he vainly tried to stop the records jumping as the roadies sorted out the stage for the next act.
Pirates Radio when UK commercial radio wasn’t legal until the 1970’s. Thereafter slowly it was allowed starting I believe with CAPITAL which had a very limited radio reach. I recall watching the Grey Ghost either BBC or ITV as new musical artist were introduced.
