Because if it's American football, it's presumed Fahrenheit because no one in the US other than scientists (and sometimes doctors) uses any other temperature scale.

Yeah, I get the °F thing is American but it's the use of 'literally' that throws me, people seem to use it for emphasis when really it's used to indicate something is to be taken literally. eg: A mountaineer friend had a narrow escape from an avalanche, he was so scared he literally shat himself.

It bugs me too, how common usage can change the meaning of words. It shouldn't be allowed, that a bunch of WRONG people can change the meaning of a word!
