Yvelise was raised in a minor noble house, but was the product of an affair between her father and a maid servant. The maid was let go, and she never really got to know or even meet her birth mother.

Because of the circumstance of her birth, and her family believing they were much more important than they were, she was treated poorly for bringing shame to their name, despite, obviously, having no say in her own existence. She was raised to believe she was unworthy of love, and would never marry.

She absolutely had the idea that getting married and bringing joy to her husband was the most important thing she could do, and she was determined to find a match. If she found a good one, she thought, maybe her family would see her as having worth.

When she was abducted from her family's cottage in the Highlands, she told the kidnapper that her family would never pay to have her back, and that he may as well just leave her alone. At one point, she even asked him to please not take her back. Unfortunately, they did pay for her return.

Not long after, she was abducted again while out at the market. It was the same man as the first, having completed the job of ransoming her, he figured there was no harm in getting her away from her family. Unfortunately, he didn't think ahead to realize she had nowhere to go, and no experience.

She was incapable of doing most things. She could cook very basic meals, embroider, and clean/do laundry. So, all in all, she was kind of helpless.
