Daly was born in Queens, N.Y., in 1921. She attended a laboratory high school where she was encouraged to pursue chemistry. She graduated magna cum laude from Queens College in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and earned her Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1947. /2

Daly received fellowships for her graduate studies due to the need for scientists to support the war effort. Her work advanced our understanding of nucleic acids and protein synthesis. Watson and Crick cited one of Daly’s papers when accepting the Nobel Prize for describing the structure of DNA. /3

Daly did some of the earliest work on the impact of diet on cardiac and circulatory health. She showed that a diet high in cholesterol led to clogged arteries, in turn leading to heart attacks. She was also among the first to investigate the effect of smoking on hypertension and the lungs. /4

While performing this important research, Daly also worked to increase minority enrollment in graduate and professional schools. In 1975, Daly was one of 30 minority women scientists to attend a conference examining the challenges facing minority women in STEM fields. /end
