Burroughs was born in Orange, Va., in 1879, to formerly enslaved parents. She and her mother relocated to D.C. in 1883 to gain better opportunities for education and employment. There she met her role models, civil rights activists and suffragists Anna J. Cooper and March Church Terrell. /2

After she was refused a teaching position for being too dark-skinned, Burroughs worked for the National Baptist Convention from 1898 to 1909. She helped found the Women’s Convention and became involved in the National Association of Colored Women along with educator Mary McLeod Bethune. /3

Burroughs proposed her idea of a school to the National Baptist Convention, which purchased and donated six acres of land. Not wanting to rely on money from wealthy white donors, Burroughs solicited small donations from the Black community to fund construction of the school. /4

Burroughs believed Black women should have the opportunity for training so they could gain more career choices than domestic work. The school was renamed in her honor in 1964. The Trades Hall, as it is now known, is a National Historic Landmark. /end

Every time I read these stories I get pissed. Raised in the South during segregation we were taught nothing, zero, about Black history or historical Black figures, other than maybe George Washington Carver. That's it. I was deprived cultural enrichment by my white overlords.
