Some of Pippin’s work reflects biblical subjects. His Holy Mountain series (1944-45) depicts a peaceful, idyllic scene but with a background of soldiers, bombs and graveyards. His painting The Knowledge of God includes a tiny brown figure hanging in the trees to depict lynching. /4
