Jehovah’s Witnesses refused to swear loyalty to Hitler, join Nazi organizations or perform military service, making them the first Christian denomination banned by the Nazis and the most extensively persecuted. Many were expelled from schools, fired from jobs and brutally beaten. /2

The Nazis also denounced Jehovah’s Witnesses for their reliance on Old Testament texts, linking them to “international Jewry.” Unlike Jews and Romani, however, Witnesses weren’t persecuted because of their race and could escape harm by signing a document renouncing their faith. /3

The Jehovah’s Witnesses would not back down. On June 25, 1933, they issued a declaration of their political neutrality and appeal for the right to exercise their faith. The persecution increased. By 1934, they told Hitler that “God will destroy you” and said they’d expose Nazi persecution. /4
