Carson began her career at the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries, where she wrote copy for weekly seven-minute educational radio broadcasts on aquatic life. She also published articles based on her research on Chesapeake Bay sea life in local newspapers and magazines. /2

Carson first became interested in DDT in 1945, when the pesticide was beginning to undergo tests for safety, but editors were not interested in the topic. Carson began working on Silent Spring in the late 1950s, when the federal government began spraying DDT to eradicate the gypsy moth. /5
