I'm personally a huge fan of this, but it does seem to have an unfortunate failure rate and a lot of players ram their head against a wall forever until either the wall or their head explodes.

A more recent major example of Fromsoft doing this would be Margit in Elden Ring.
There is a more noticeable aspect of this though, which is also a trick Fromsoft does pretty often. They will put in an unnatural difficulty spike from one area to the next in order to try and get the player to notice and go to another, easier area first, and DS1 is offering several options.
