Black History Month Stories.
Today I'm very excited to cover one of my favorite Black Civil War heroes and one of the most badass negroes to ever live: Robert Smalls!
His story is one of almost unimaginable bravery and intelligence. A story that embarrassed the fuck out of the confederacy.

And I'm going to make you happy: I did not know about Robert Smalls, so you've taught me something and you wrote this beautifully. I was biting my nails and didn't realize it. Thank you again.
Excellent write ups.

In 1861, he was trying to save enough to buy freedom for his family.
He was considered "a good one" and believed to be content as a slave, but unknown to the white folk, he was plotting.
That night, the three white officers in charge left the ship to stay on shore for the night, leaving Smalls and the crew on charge.
And that, as they say, is where they fucked up.
His wife (equally badass) told him "It is a risk dear, but you and I and our little ones must be free. I will go, for where you die, I will die."
The risk Smalls was taking was huge. If captured, he would almost certainly be tortured in horrible ways and then killed. Likely his wife and children would face similar.
Remember, reports of whipping, branding, genital mutilation, and lynching were common.
Smalls had his crew pretend to escort the families off the Planter, but secreted them on another ship to be picked up later.
That's when Robert Smalls executed his plan and entered the history books.
