I didn't catch "Falcon & WS" show. I don't have Disney+. But this film felt like teeth ground to gum line. Helluva review, sir. (Side note: Anyone else feel like Tim Blake Nelson and Anthony Mackie were never in same room? Sloppy editing, shooting throughout.)
I didn't have the vitriol a lot of ppl have for the movie, but this whole Sam Wilson's-journey-to-Captain America arc is just one big missed opportunity. One pretty decent to very good story stretched way too thinly over a season of television and now a film.
I feel like it only feels thin because they weren't totally committed to Sam going through an internal journey. Despite him hanging out with Isaiah Bradley, Sam, at least from a political standpoint, is essentially the same character. There's no arc because his story is a flat line.
Have to disagree w/one point: The action? NOT good.
Bad choreography + I couldn't buy it: Sam, NOT in his suit, FLIPPED soldiers THRU THE AIR as if w/super-strength. He took the brunt of electroshock batons that Steve couldn't. And, just like in F&tWS, wields the shield as if he's a super-soldier.
Putting aside the above, as a white guy, I couldn't understand why he grinned & bore it either w/Ross (who they retcon as a villain). But I also didn't get why—as a HUGE Falcon fan to this point—we were supposed to even CARE about Sam OR his friends. HUGE error not making Isaiah his partner btw.
I’m miffed by the implication that this CAPTAIN AMERICA needs to be compared to another Black film, as though these two works exist in parallel with each other even though they don’t. They narratively graze each other but they’re not being done with the same aim.
Divisive but fair! As a longtime cap fan I appreciated how much it felt like you were defending who the character actually is supposed to be instead of…whatever this was

What's changed?
It was my expectation after the TV show.
