The best thing is dumpster diving though! My sim has been selling everything she finds in the trash! Although this only works bc she's a spellcaster. The only ways to restore trashed objects is either with the Repario spell or with the smog vacuum.

The problem is that the using the smog vacuum costs pieces (from the bits and pieces currency) and those are kinda difficult to produce as you get fewer of them from recycling compared to bits.
