The $224/per person/day is to my understanding the cost the Immigration department has averaged to provide temporary shelter and food, mainly in hotels. It's spun like this to make people mad.

This is normal right wing nonsense, claiming immigrants get way more benefits than they do. In Ireland they used to tell us they got $25 per month just for haircuts while living in temporary awful accommodation. To most uneducated people this passes the smell test because they don’t know the truth.
