Just discovered that a serious typewriter fan, Richard Polt, has an *amazing* website about classic typewriters, including scans of a host of product manuals -- the one for mine adds the specific name for this Model 5, the Streamline. Perfect for its era!

I bought a bright red typewriter when auditing at university in West Germany. Positions of Z and Y reversed. Typed my weekly “supervision” (tutorial) essays at Cambridge - very unusual at the time. Have kept them, along with first extended academic piece, love monologues in medieval French romances!

I completed undergraduate entirely without learning any keyboard skills--all work was done in pen. Then in grad school in the US the Mac SE was on the scene (and my wife's scholarship funded one, which we shared), so I skipped typewriters entirely. But I've always loved using them!

Those are so cool. (But it also brought back memories of trying to sleep while my roommate plunked away throughout the night on his typewriter trying to get his papers done before the deadline. Thank goodness they can type a prompt in and have a paper in under a minute now.)
