It's an interesting tree, well sub-tree. Being not quite a shrub, nor tree. But the history of it is one of Roman colonisation, and then of the Church.

They bloom in May which coincided with my mum’s birthday and I remember as a child gathering a few of the blooms to give to her on her special day

I remember 2 children bringing May blossom for our teacher who hastily and without any thanks made them take it to the teacher next door. Our teacher was superstitious and so didn’t want any May blossom in her classroom. Next door teacher could have the bad luck, it seemed! That was 1950s.
