half life 2 was so ahead of its time that it's kind of a struggle to make it look bad 21 years later

back then generational leaps happened every 3-4 years and not 20 🥲

It always seems like RTX applications like this have an artistic vision in mind, when it's just a lighting tech.

Here they tried to make surfaces and other textures look cleaner, but in that pursuit, they seem to have removed some of the grime that befits this area.

Yeah I'm the same. I feel this way with the original TLOU versus the PS5 version. The technical constraints and solutions in the original give it a stylistion that satisfies the same part of my brain which enjoys finding out something is actually made of cake

Always interesting to me how much "accidental" ease of reading an environment comes with less "realistic" environments/lighting/shading.

I think it's especially rough with tech demo updates like this, because it's focused less on gameplay readability and more on seeing how many new features can be leveraged.
