I'm not sure how it works in other countries, but in Australia a public library card gives you access to an absolute truckload of eresources including eBooks, audiobooks, Britannica, World Book, loads of major magazines and a whole lot more, most of which you can access at home.

Libraries in my 50 mile radius also have bookstores. All the proceeds go to funding the local libraries.

If you can't physically make it to a library, and yours doesn't have a way to apply online, the Broward County Library offers cards online regardless of residency.

I got my first library card this October and it's been amazing! This gives me access to free apps for ebooks, magazines, newspapers, comics, and more! And so many books in the library. And many libraries share books amongst eachother so you'd have access to even more books!

Also, most libraries have a feature where you can request a book online and they’ll hold it for you. Then you just show up at the desk and they’ll check it out (if you have your library card). Heard of some book you are curious about but don’t want to buy? Increase user ship at the library please.
