To be excruciatingly vulnerable in public, the present discussion of autism is breaking me. Autism is overwhelmingly genetic. Desperate parents who blame vaccines (or whatever) for making their kids autistic might do well to look closer at their own families.

My family and I knew something was up with me when I was a toddler but we didn't have the language to understand it then because the prevalent belief until recently was that that girls could not be autistic.

I didn't know I was autistic until my kid was assessed. Now, I can see that my matrilineal line is full of autistic women. We're all super sensitive, perceptive, and exceptionally good at pattern recognition. We have quick processing and reasoning.

Being autistic is good for my job. Although I'm bombarded by overwhelming sensory information, which is exhausting, it means I can keep a lot of mental tabs open at once and I can do deep, deep dives of just about anything. It's not a superpower—it's just how my brain works.

The autism-as-epidemic discourse needs to stop. Autism is increasingly prevalent largely because it's now better recognized. And because neurodivergent people tend to cluster together, that probably leads to more neurodivergent babies. That's how genes work. (Love this meme, btw ⬇️)
