Well he (Pickett) did graduate last of his class at West Point. Either the dog ate his homework, or he was out getting his hair done, the day Wellesley & Bonaparte were discussed.
The amount that this guy sucked lee's dick is so funny when you realize that lee's tactical victories are all incredible strategic failures. It's like somebody bragging about their sick kill in a capture the flag game mode as they lose every objective simultaneously.
I don’t know what this is about or who this is. But I *think there is a typo. Pretty sure “mas” should be more like “murh”. Grammar ain’t no joke, yah hirh.
Always liked him saying that if the south had ever gotten the edge, the north would have simply taken their other hand from behind their back, and crushed them.
Welcome back to Gettysburg, brought to you by Taco Bell. Later, after you take your tour of Cemetery Ridge, stop by our new location on Little Round Top.
It does feel like his entire historical premise was built on the idea that Lee was the smartest, most natural leader ever, as opposed to nothing more than a buttoned-up figurehead people needed to imagine he was. Seeing him as grossly incompetent but orderly arranges the pieces so much better.
I have read Shelby’s books, not just watched on Ken Burn’s Civil War. I can honestly say, and I’ve read a lot of books on the Civil War, One of if not the best writers and Historian’s of the Civil War. pick up Shiloh and read it. Best Civil War historical book written.
Shelby’s take that our country “failing to do what we do best, which is comprise,” concerning the root cause of the war (states rights for/against slavery) is still nauseating.
Especially when you consider that the whole story of American domestic politics from 1783 to 1861 was just one endless parade of compromises on the slavery issue and the South constantly responding with "not enough, more for us!"
Pickets charge was the most valiant since the misguided charge of Light Brigade at Crimea. A brave foolhardy charge against a well protected, disciplined Union Army. The question. Where is your brigade? To Pickett as the dribs & drabs of his men returned was "I have no brigade."Would make a rock sob
Ist Minnesota out of 262 brave men 47 were left as they took the centre at cemetery ridge. They were outnumbered forgot just how many. AP Hill ordering the charge over open ground for reason. If 1st Minnesota hadn't held centre it would have broken & split. Union troops would have been flanked.
He kind of became another character in the story because folks loved the way he talked. If Burns made "Civil War" now, there hopefully would be less reliance on Foote and a LOT more on the experience of enslaved people. Plus a clear-eyed preview of the horrors of reconstruction.
I went out and bought Shelby Foote’s 3-volume history of the Civil War after the first airing of the Ken Burns opus. Still got ‘em: I reread them from time to time just for the way he tells the story.
