Not only can they not claim benefits, is they can't seek work until their asylum application has been fully processed. Or at least the working visas are sorted out from what I can gather.

I think Labour have changed that slightly, if their asylum application is delayed for over 12 months, as long as it isn’t because of appeal or a delay caused by the asylum seeker, they can apply for permission to work.

Its better, but I think a lot of the problems around the messaging we have around people claiming asylum stem from the fact they come here ready to work and can't, making to easy for far right commentators to show them getting services and accommodation as if that's their first choice.

Agreed. We really need an open conversation about asylum. Including why people seek asylum, the full process, our legal obligations and what we must provide, also what we should do as a compassionate country. Until we have that conversation the far right will control the narrative

Heard the same story I heard 25 years ago from a guy in the pub . They are getting council houses with all new appliances then selling them on. It’s was a lie then and still is
