People in full employment should be paid enough to raise 2-3 children without looking to the state for support. The UK is suffering from ridiculous costs for housing, power, water, transport. All because of Thatcherism. A socialist government with balls would reverse all this.

He has a romantic image of what these "bygone eras" were like. If you were poor having a large family was often the only way to survive, so they could go to work, or help on the land, to put food on the table and pay the bills, and look after the aged and infirm parents and grandparents.
