The questions to ask are how relevant is the concept of "charts" as time goes on? How many bands want to "make it big" vs have a strong fan base? Do bands even want to be full-time bands or is that increasingly a side-gig? Do charts accurately capture online media consumption?

Thanks to Spotify etc., listeners are more focused on individual songs instead of full albums. This fits individual artists and colabs much better, thus earning more.

Simple economics. Nobody can afford to drop their day jobs long enough to keep a stable lineup together and go on tour, and even fewer of those day jobs are 9-5 with evenings and weekends clear. Running a band is more cat herding than making music. Just play with flexible lineups and stay local.
