I have only tested this on my iPhone - I am particularly interested in getting screenshots (or shore screen recording videos) from Android users who are unable to view the content without being redirected to the Play store to install the app

OK here's the big mystery: a few people have reported that TikTok shows them a "play" button but clicking that takes them to the App Store

For tiktok, viewing a video when the app is not installed is... close to impossible. Given the amount of links my partner sent me I eventually installed it to avoid that

I didnt even get not now. The video played with no sound.. then a watch button appears that takes you to play store. Swiping back then has the video playing with sound.

My current hunch is that you need to have a VERY high level of dark pattern UI navigation literacy to successfully view linked content on TikTok and Instagram without having an account or the app installed... but there may also be edge-cases or bugs where you cannot view that content at all

Weirdly TikTok still let you download whole videos and re-upload them to other platforms - I've always avoided that option because it feels disrespectful to the original creators, but maybe that's actually the most ethical way to help them amplify their content beyond the walls of that platform?

I was sent a link to Instagram the other day, and I could not open it at all without an account because the account was age restricted to 16 years or something like that.

I constantly get links to IG that I can't see, or I can't watch it comfortable enough to bother. Videos are specially onerous.

Both worked for me on Android but it was pretty painful and I generally avoid clicking on either. TikTok in particular was a fight to avoid getting pushed onto the app that I don't have, e.g. when trying to click on "see more".

I am on Android (Pixel 8 Chrome browser) and saw the same behavior as you did - i.e. I had to hit the Close on Instagram and Not Now button on TikTok. Only then I could see the content.

yt-dlp should work with Facebook videos, Instagram Reels and Tik Tok videos, with a bit ffmpeg magic it should be possible to repost them here on Bluesky directly, if so desired.

Otherwise those sites are extremely hostile to links from inside and outside if there is no app connection.
