Sadly money has a big influence in political campains (which is also not really democratic in itself, especially considering when you own entire social media structures, news etc.)
The shit show is getting worse and worse since SCOTUS ruled on Citizens United, the decision I consider to be the point where American democracy started to die. Still, we must work with the tools we have.
I think the base every democracy should set is that human rights aren't discussable and should be always provided.
And to pursue any political campaigns that even try to work their way around them (and leading to political bans when tried over and over again)

Here in Germany the first sentence of the Grundgesetz, the postwar constitution, is "Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar." - "The dignity of man is untouchable." I think this is such a simple but important sentence for a democrathy.
My favorite SHR song is "Verb! That's What's Happening". America sure got dumb in a big hurry since SHR left the air. Especially about their government.
I think my favorite song is "The Great American Melting Pot". It beautifully depicts what America could and should be. The story it tells is true, my own family followed similar paths immigrating to America. It brings a tear to my eye.

Same with sexual offenses, they need harder sentences.
