The U.S. has been run by billionaires through lobbying—legalized bribery—since the 1980s. GOP does it better, DNC a bit less. But ideology now matters more than money. MAGA has taken over. You can’t fight fascism by blaming oligarchs while ignoring the masses radicalized by it.

No, they would NOT be in jail. The second strongest party in the German parliament is the far right AfD. Massive demonstrations to ban this party have been ignored by politicians for years, and now the leadership of the conservative CDU is openly talking about 'treating them like any other party'.

Part of the problem is that on one side you have actual fascists wanting to merge corporate power and state power in a totalitarian dictatorship, and on the other side, the opposition party doesn't want to check corporate power because they are "pro-business", meaning funded by billionaires.

Bernie, AOC and their ilk are the only ones really fighting against this. Calling it oligarchy instead of fascism is a strategic choice, because as Trump has plainly shown, most Americans slept through 6th grade civics and don't know what any words ending with ism mean. Oligarchy is easily defined.

I would argue that fascism is never so appealing that it spontaneously appears in a population without some oligarchs forcing it down people's throats. I square-danced in middle school in the 80's because 50 years earlier, Henry Ford hated black people and jazz music. Wealth is power. It corrupts.
