It’s not a possibility so much as a fact. Trump is financially beholden to Putin and this was true last time as well. The only difference is that last time there were guard rails in place. Now there are none.

They certainly have kompromat on him. But Trump also is famously afraid of being poisoned. It’s more that he knows Russia will assassinate him if he doesn’t tow the line than the debt itself. But they keep presenting him with ways to further enrich himself, which he also cares about.

Sadly, I would feel better if I was convinced Trump was working for Putin. But I think it's a dangerous combination of resentment & the desire to be seen as the "dealmaker."

In his business dealings, Trump often valued the deal over the details and that seems to be the case here.

To be clear, Trump may be working for Putin without knowing he’s working for Putin. Many assets don’t know they’r assets, and Trump very much fits the profile of a “useful idiot.”

That could be true. But even so, I think I prefer thinking of him as a "useful idiot" than someone venal enough to know what he was doing and do it willingly.
