I switched to Proton a few years ago and haven't had cause for regret, though there are a couple of things I wish they would add - most importantly, Linux support for Proton Drive.

Yeah, it’s definitely a solid option. It might be what I wind up sticking with, but my preference is for something open-source and Linux support would be cool. But functionality is more important than it being opensource.

It's always possible to run your own server with sendmail or similar, but few have the time and competence to manage something like that - I sure don't. Depends on what services you need. Is it just email, or do you need a calendar? Cloud storage? I want all of that, plus my own domain.

That’s exactly the problem that I’m looking to solve for people.

I’m working on step-by-step guides on how to do that, plus I’ll volunteer a few hours a week to personally set people up through remote access. And working on a plan to get cost-sharing for Canadian Cloud space — at cost.

There are amazing Canadian services available for much of this. The ones that I’ve seen don’t currently meet the mark of what I’m looking for (data sovereignty, no benefit to US, pref. open source, strong encryption and security), but they may work for a lot of people.

That’s why I’m keeping my personal free accounts open and thoroughly deleting my data from them. It’s challenging for sure, I’m in the same boat for a lot of things

If I recall correctly, there are ways to set up those services so people just need to be sent a link to use them. But yes, you’re right definitely complex! I’m looking into that too, feel free to reach out at any point

You are using PGP for every mail?

If not your provider security is pointless because you can't guarantee the path of the mail is secure.

Could go through a dozen servers, none of which you control.

Encrypt on your machine, decrypt on theirs. A good start, and provider is irrelevant.

bear in mind that proton is a one way road. it doesn't support forwarding to other emails
