I was thinking just in regard to early test flights too. I don't recall many Saturn V early flights or failures. To not even be able to orbit on your 8th flight is embarrassing.

There were no outright failures. But Apollo 6 had problems with the upper stages due to vibrations.

I'm not even sure where you got $40B from because that's just straight up not true. Saying they weren't caused by the Saturn V is a moot point because this also wasn't caused by the super heavy booster

And the 40 billion included all the flights. Not just development.

Starship will end up costing a similar amount to develop.

Great. Now you just have to find something for the booster to do without the ship and it’s a success.

I still don't see the comparison of starship to JUST the Saturn V. The booster is useless without ship but the Saturn V is useless with a SM that explodes. Starship has had successful flights, and at the end of the day these are TEST flights. If these were commercial flights it'd be very different.

The Saturn V launched Skylab. No service module.

I just don’t see the point of pretending Starship is cheap. The current cost is somewhere near 10 billion. The cost of human rating it will push that much much higher.

Hopefully it will be cheaper per launch. But a lot of work remains to do.

I don't even disagree. My original point was that it doesn't make sense to compare the Saturn Vs success during actual missions to Starships Test flights. If starship blows up multiple times with a payload then I'll join the outrage

But none of the Saturn V tests failed.

The closest was 6, but that still made it to orbit and back.
