At least the pistachios and almonds are high value. The alfalfa is nuts--the Middle West can grow its own alfalfa. Ethan B is correct--the huge trucks carrying alfalfa to the Middle West you see on I-80 are basically ferrying water out of the state.

Sure. But CA is productive partly because it gets water that could be used for something else.

Think of it this way: Ag provides 2% of CA's GDP. But 80% of the CA water used by industry and homes is devoted to it. Is this the best possible allocation?
